The pain caused by Morton’s neuroma is typically experienced at the ball of the foot. Many patients describe the sensation as feeling like they are walking on a marble or have a pebble stuck in their shoe. Because of this, those with the condition may find walking to be increasingly difficult and uncomfortable. They may also experience a numbing, tingling, or burning sensation in the foot and toes.
Causes and Risk Factors One of the most common factors that influence the development of Morton’s neuroma is improper footwear. Those who generally wear tightly fitted shoes or shoes with higher heels are more at risk of getting this condition. Having an underlying foot abnormality may also increase your risk, as it can cause instability and add excess pressure onto the nerves of the foot. In fact, complex structural issues such as bunions, hammertoes, and flat feet have been known to lead to Morton’s neuroma if not treated promptly.
Athletes also have a tendency to get Morton’s neuroma due to the repetitive motions and intense pressure placed on the ball of the foot while running or jumping. It can also develop as a result of a direct sports injury to the foot.
Advanced Care and Surgical Solutions While conservative treatments like custom orthotics, footwear modifications, or injection therapy can provide relief for many, chronic pain may require a more advanced approach including surgical removal. If you are suffering from a painful neuroma or the underlying deformities that cause them, our practice offers both advanced surgical and non-surgical care for neuromas.
